Privacy Policy

Athany by Beckah is a call-to-prayer app by Beckah Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. This policy explains what the app collects and how it is used. We collect only what the app needs to work, and we do not sell your data.

What we collect

• Phone number — to create and sign in to your account (via Firebase phone authentication).
• Profile you provide — your name, and optionally a city, photo, and (for a muathin) masjid name and details.
• Location— used on your device to calculate accurate prayer times, the Qibla direction, and local weather. A muathin may also save the masjid's location to anchor community verification. Location is used for these features and is not sold.
• Background location — Athany uses your location in the background (when the app is closed) only to keep your phone silent inside the masjid at prayer time and to hold the recorded athan when you are already at a masjid. This background location is used on your device and is never shared or sold.
• Microphone — only while a muathin is actively broadcasting the live adhan. The app does not record or listen in the background.
• Notification token — to send prayer/broadcast and announcement notifications you opt into.

How your information is used

• To provide prayer times, Qibla, weather, the live adhan, the masjid display, and notifications.
• To let listeners follow a muathin and to support community verification of a muathin.

Location & background location

Athany requests location access, including background location ("Allow all the time"), for two on-device features:

• Masjid auto-silence — at prayer time, while the app is closed, Athany checks whether your phone is inside the masjid geofence you chose and enables Do Not Disturb, turning it back off when you leave.
• Athan suppression— when the scheduled athan alarm fires and your phone is already at a masjid, Athany holds the recorded athan so it doesn't play over the live one.

This background location is processed on your device to control these silence features. It is never shared, sold, or used for advertising. You can revoke location access at any time in your device settings; the two features above simply stop working.

Where it is stored

Account and app data are stored using Google Firebase (Authentication, Firestore, Storage). The public masjid display reads only non-personal information (masjid name, city, prayer settings, messages) — never your phone number, email, or notification token.

Sharing

We do not sell your personal information. Information is shared only with infrastructure providers (e.g. Google Firebase, and Agora for live audio) needed to run the service, and as required by law.

Your choices

• You can edit your profile, manage notification preferences, and stop following a muathin in the app.
• You can request deletion of your account and associated data — see Delete Your Account.

Children

Athany by Beckah is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13.
